A large earthquake hit northeastern Japan on March 11, 2011. The Japan earthquake measured 8.9 on the Richter scale and set off a tsunami. Witnesses stated that the Japan earthquake lasted several minutes.
TheJapan earthquake hit 125 kilometres off the eastern coast and has set off a tsunami. Officials state that waves as high as 20 feet could hit the coast.
There are reports of tsunami waves hitting the Miyagi prefecture in Sendai area. Japan public broadcaster NHK Public aired Japan tsunami video that showed cars, houses and buildings being swept away by water.
